Reading Series: Margaret Sweatman

The University of New Brunswick would like to invite you to a literary reading by acclaimed Canadian writer Margaret Sweatman. She will read from her latest novel, The Players. This witty historical novel examines the high-stakes lives of actors and probes the nature o performance.

Sweatman is the author of three previous novels: Fox, Sam & Angie, and When Alice Lay Down With Peter.

The reading will be held on Tuesday, February 9th at 8:00pm in the Alumni Memorial Lounge on the University of New Brunswick's Fredericton campus.

Based on the life of Melbourne artist Clarice Beckett (1887-1935), Night Street tells the story of Clarice, a prolific landscape painter working in the city and suburbs of Melbourne in the early decades of the twentieth century. Her highly atmospheric, enigmatic landscapes find little favour with the critics who disparage her style and subjects. But despite an indifferent art world and a seemingly confined existence as a spinster daughter in the parental home, Clarice leads an intense and sensual private life and has an extraordinary talent for making simple city and seascapes haunting and mysteriously revelatory.

Reading Series 1st Event

For the first event in this year's reading series, UNB's new writer-in-residence, Fred Stenson will be reading on September 16th at the Alumni Memorial Building.

Stenson is the author of fifteen books, including The Trade, which was shortlisted for the Giller Prize in 2000. His new novel, The Great Karoo is a nominee for the 2009 Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best Book.

Please join us for the reading on Wednesday, September 16th at 8:00 pm in the Alumni Memorial Building Lounge.
